This 1989 320i Touring was both on regular German Ebay (auction with reserve) and on a German Craigslist equivalent (Kleinanzeigen). So I bid less than 50% of the Kleinanzeigen price... and won ! My highest bid didn't meet the reserve at first, but suddenly it did. What do you think, is this a decent car?

Lots of work done (including belts), rust issues all fixed excluding minimal rust on the hatch, passed German inspection this spring, includes spare unripped driver seat+ original steering wheel, 3.5 hour drive from my home.

I haven't see the car in person yet. If it's not as described I'll have to walk away, but if it is as described it might've been a proper bargain.

edit : updated with a screenshot of the decoded VIN.

Looks a little scruffy, but doesn't seem entirely out of order. Just hope that those brown patches next to the rear hatch seal are just dirt and not rust...

Fingers crossed!

Seems pretty awesome. Forgive my ignorance, but what kind of engine does this come with?

Also which german state are you in? (Just curious).

It's a 320i, so it's got the 6 cylinder 2.0L M20B20. The same engine as the 325i, but with less displacement (and horsepower).

I'm not in Germany actually, I'm in Groningen, the Netherlands. 30-40 minutes west of the German border.

What is that terrible thing on the drivers seat?

It primarily looks like it needs a wash. It won't be in museum condition though. The original Ebay ad has some higher res pictures, I'll upload those shortly.

Looks in pretty good shape to me. I'd totally drive that. If my giant feet would fit. That's the reason I don't have my E30 anymore. :(

Thanks for the info! I think I have heard of Gorningen before but not sure where I heard about it.

Is it easy to import a car from another EU country?

(Sorry I have so many questions...I have never been to Europe).

Yes, it is easy, I've done it before. You bring the papers and the car to the local car registration agency or whatever it's called. A mechanic like person checks if the car is the one that belongs to the papers, a clerk checks the papers and if it isn't registered as stolen (EU systems are integrated) and if it passes that's about it. Total costs? €125-150 or so. Plus a percentage of the taxes you'd pay on a new car, but that's €0 on a car as old as this one. If it's got a valid inspection that's accepted as well.

What's the little eyebrow thing on the lip of the hood, over the top of the lights?

Are car unibrows the European version of American car eyelashes?

It's an optional part, maybe aftermarket but I'm not sure. I suppose its intent is to give it an angry look.

It looks... stoned. or something. hungover maybe?

Is that a thing over there? I honestly don't think I've ever seen that before.

So... how much did you pay for it?

Ha! Since I've shipped the last E30 Touring I bought to Texas and I'm planning on doing the same with this one it might not be in my best interest to discuss financials. Let's just say the listed price for this car was overpriced, but like I mentioned I paid less than 50% (~45%) in the Ebay auction. Which is, if the condition is as stated, definitely a bargain but not an obscene one. Without having seen it in person I'm confident it's not as nice as the museum piece that's in Texas now, which I paid considerably more for.

Its often used by the crowd, who gets a lowered 90s Golf/Polo or Corsa, one of those in DIY matte black, for approximately one or two grand, than adds shady mesh wheels and those part-headlight covers, its known as the "evil eyes" treatment here. Basically, those are the cars that make everyone hate modifieds, often they also feature rotten or cheapy-racey exhausts, which let those 1.6l engines growl like a bear with stomach ache.

I hope I'm wrong but that looks like it might be rusted through in that area. If it does turn out well, maybe you want to ship it to Canada though? :)

That looks dirty, mostly. I'm not ruling out that there's some rust though, although that specific spot isn't known for rust iirc. It's the hatch itself that rusts frequently. I've seen rust near the tailights on these cars though, on the bottom corner facing the center of the car. This one seems to have a little bit of it at the left light, judging from the picture.

I could ship it to Canada actually, but I'm giving someone in Texas first choice. You do have the advantage that you don't have to wait until December before it becomes of age.

Well, my Texan contact (see the link in my other replies) won't commit to it just yet, not until he has sold the E30 Touring he's got at the moment, and doesn't mind me selling it to someone else. I'm not going to actively look for other buyers, but if you're interested...

One small caveat: Month of first registration is 12-1989, which isn't 25 years ago just yet. I don't know when in 1989 (or '88, theoretically) it was manufactured, but if one could prove an earlier date of manufacture it'll be eligible for import into the US earlier than December 2014. Regular German (and my native Dutch) documentation only lists date of first registration (the day it received license plates) and I doubt US customs will accept a printout of a VIN decoding website.

Goed nieuws! I may have just picked up a new car myself (more on that when I have it) so it would probably not make a whole lot of financial sense for me to grab another at this time, especially with my current e30 needing work. Keep us updated though, if things progress well I might have to make room for a touring at some point down the line.
